Heuring brings 25 years of experience in the world of cinematography to his work. His first published article ran in American Cinematographer Magazine in 1987. Soon he was hired on the magazine’s staff, where he worked under the mentorship of renowned film historian George Turner. Heuring eventually rose to the position of editor, becoming the youngest person ever to hold that title. He also oversaw the advertising and art departments, and shepherded the Sixth Edition of the American Cinematographer Manual and other books to publication. In 1995, he left AC to join Creative Communications Services, where his deep understanding of the art and craft of cinematography was put to use for clients like Eastman Kodak, Universal Studios, LaserPacific, Cinesite, Cineric, Lowry Digital, Reliance Media, Hewlitt-Packard, FotoKem, Musco, TrioScopics, NeTune, Fletcher Camera, and the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600.
Heuring served as liaison to invaluable customers, including top cinematographers. Other services provided include advertising copywriting (including Kodak’s On Film Canada ad campaign), newsletter writing and editing, speechwriting, press releases, white papers and product launch materials. At CCS, Heuring continued his now 25-year association with the American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Awards, and continued writing for AC and a wide range of other industry publications.
Heuring left CCS in September 2011 and now works as an independent freelance writer and consultant. To date, he has written more than 1000 articles for filmmaking publications like Variety, Hollywood Reporter, ICG Magazine, American Cinematographer and In Camera Magazine. He has done writing and panel organization, planning and moderation for a long list of industry organizations and events including AMPAS, ATAS, the Tech Council, the ASC Technology Committee, IDA, AFI, AICP, Camerimage, CineGear, HD Expo/Creatasphere, PGA/Produced By, and the ICG Emerging Cinematographer Awards, to name a few.
David Heuring can put his unparalleled experience, extraordinarily strong relationships with filmmakers, and respect in the community to work in service of your goals. In the global cinematography community, there’s no better source for insightful strategy and effective messaging.
